Donate to Wayanad Landslide Response

Devasting landslides swept the district of Wayanad in Kerala on 30 July 2024.

Two villages have been completely levelled, wiping out all 150 houses located there. Official reports confirm over 250 deaths, 300 persons still missing and more than 200 injured are receiving treatment. There is a high risk of disease, and it is feared that the death toll will rise.

The affected communities are experiencing severe trauma, having lost all their possessions and assets overnight. Search and rescue operations are still ongoing; however, access to the most affected village remains challenging due to connectivity issues. The disaster has also affected migrant workers from several states, many of whom have yet to be identified.

HAI’s LOCAL members are on-ground, mobilising support, taking part in search and rescue efforts, mobilising support for the evolving WASH needs, extending psychosocial care, particularly for children, providing translation support to the children of interstate migrant workers and collaborating with the local government to ensure a coordinated response.

Rebuilding Lives, Restoring Hope: Supporting Families Displaced by Ethnic Violence in Manipur

In the wake of escalating ethnic violence in Manipur, India, over 45,000 persons have been forcibly displaced from their homes, leaving them vulnerable and in desperate need of our support. We are launching a heartfelt campaign to rally together and extend a helping hand to affected families, offering them hope, stability, and the resources necessary to rebuild their lives.

Background and Context

Manipur, a state in Northeast India, has been grappling with deep-rooted ethnic tensions, leading to violent clashes and the displacement of countless families. Large-scale violence broke out on 3 May 2023 between the tribal and non-tribal communities after massive opposition by Manipur’s tribal communities to the demand of the Meiteis community, for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status.

The entire state is facing violence; homes and villages were raided by mobs and families are fleeing to find shelter or make it to relief camps. The devastating consequences of this violence have left families traumatized, separated, and struggling to survive amidst the chaos.

Our Campaign’s Objective

The primary goal of our campaign is to provide phase-wise support to families displaced by ethnic violence in Manipur, addressing their immediate, medium-term, and long-term needs.

By mobilizing resources, and seeking in-kind support / generous donations, we aim to restore hope and rebuild lives by meeting urgent needs of relief items, addressing early recovery and restoration needs of shelter and livelihood restoration, as well as fostering harmony and peacebuilding efforts in the long-term.

Facing religious persecution, the minority Hindu population from Pakistan has been fleeing and seeking refuge in India since the time of the partition. As radicalization increases in Pakistan, the number of people escaping atrocity also increases in the same proportion.

These persecuted people emigrate from Pakistan each year to escape discrimination, denial of equal development rights, violation of human rights and forced conversions. While in Pakistan, the girls felt unsafe, and all faced pressure to convert; one primary negative coping mechanism was to drop out of school. Most come from the Sindh province, where the Hindu population in Pakistan is concentrated. Primarily these migrants owned land and did farming in Pakistan. Generally, these refugees arrive on valid pilgrim visas and then seek extensions through long-term visas

month after month. The Government of India has administrative arrangements for Pakistani Hindus; they may obtain long-stay visas but

are not considered refugees by the government.

Help Rebuilding Schools in Flood Ravaged Assam

South Assam has been affected by a devastating and unprecedented flood. The enormity and the severity of the floods have resulted in huge loss of human habitat and inflicted massive damages to many schools. Silchar city and various places of the Cachar district have been going through unspeakable human tragedy and crisis owing to the severe floods for the last 15 days throwing human life completely out of gear.

Many schools, run by Vidya Bharti, have been fully or partially destroyed.

The extent of damage to such schools is presented below:

  • No. of schools affected: 20
  • No. of students affected: 5000 (approx.)
  • Damage & Destruction: School Buildings & Infrastructure, Computers, furniture & equipment, books & copies, bags, uniforms, shoes etc.
  • Estimated loss: Rs. 300.00 Lakhs (Rupees 30 million)
  • Fund needed for each school: Rs 10-50 Lakhs (Rupees 1-5 million)

Shiksha Vikash Parishad (SVP), Dakshin Assam Pranta is the state-level committee of the Vidya Bharati in the South Assam, comprising the districts of Cachar, Dima Hasao, Hailakandi & Karimganj including a part of Hojai district. SVP has been operating 44 schools (ME/High/HS School) in the name of Saraswati Vidya Mandir/ Sishu Niketans for more than 25 years.

Assam Flood Response – 2022

Floods are an almost annual phenomenon in the state of Assam. This year, incessant pre-monsoon rains and landslides have caused havoc across the state and affected 31 districts. The district Nagaon is amongst the worst affected, where 226 villages are badly affected. According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) bulleting, as of 21 May 2022, 339,427 people are badly affected in the district. Heavy inundation has caused crop loss in 14263.87 hectares of land. 110 relief camps have been set up in the district to accommodate 16,349 displaced people, while many more are spending nights under the open sky. Over 100,000 animals have also been affected.

While a detailed assessment has yet be carried out to ascertain the extent of damage to lives, livelihoods and properties, which would be done by the state and humanitarian organisations once the water recedes, the ASDMA, through a SoP, has asked humanitarian agencies to provide the following relief items to the overwhelmed population:

  1. Dry Ration / food
  2. Sanitary napkin
  3. Clothes (new)
  4. Baby food
  5. Sealed packaged drinking water
  6. Utensils (new)
  7. Sanitary supplies / Hygiene kit (soap, bucket, mug, toothpaste etc.)
  8. Baby Diapers
  9. Halogen (Chlorine tablets)
  1. First Aid box
  2. Bleaching powder
  3. Other essential commodities for immediate relief of the affected people like mosquito nets, mosquito coils, tents, candles, matchboxes, lamps, torchlight, biscuits etc.

HAI’s Response Plan

HAI has a presence in the state through its member organisations NEADS and AGUP. Our first situation report was published by ReliefWeb on 18 May 2022. HAI is preparing to start providing lifesaving relief support primarily to the displaced population. HAI is also preparing for a detailed assessment (using technology and conventional methods) to determine the interventions under-recovery and rehabilitation phases.
