Status of Frontline Humanitarian Workers
The research study “The Status of Frontline Humanitarian Workers” examines the working conditions, challenges, and wellbeing of frontline humanitarians across 60 countries through surveys, interviews, and focus groups with 734 participants. It reveals deep inequities between international and local actors: local and national NGO staff face higher risks, weaker safety nets, job insecurity, and pay disparities. Only 57% have formal contracts and less than half receive health or accident insurance. Mental health stressors are widespread, worsened by poor organisational culture. The report calls for equitable funding, risk-sharing, and a global framework—such as a Bill of Rights—to safeguard and dignify frontline workers.
